Let’s just alternate these terms. They’re synonyms anyway, right? (And yes, I know I’m focusing on a rather superficial aspect of some stories that actually raise really troubling issues. But sometimes I have to let the inner pedant out to play.) Thanks, BTPS.

One Response to “‘Sex’ and ‘Gender’”

  1. Kate Cary Says:

I learned that “sex” and “gender” weren’t synonymous owhen I did a Masters in Women’s history back in the early nineties (that it took till my early 20s for someone to point it out speaks volumes). I fell in love with the idea that there is a difference between “sex” and “gender”; it is such a useful distinction and yet I dare no longer point out misuse of either term – apparently only a lesbian trotskyite would quibble over such niceties. And yet whole pages are devoted to other niggling errors – http://www.copyblogger.com/5-common-mistakes-that-make-you-look-dumb/
