Was Mark trading on the roman association with figs and vaginas? Or perhaps he read a preprint of DH Lawrence’s poem. In part, it goes
The fig is a very secretive fruit.
As you see it standing growing, you feel at once it is symbolic:
And it seems male.
But when you come to know it better, you agree with the Romans, it is female.
The Italians vulgarly say, it stands for the female part; the fig-fruit:
The fissure, the yoni,
The wonderful moist conductivity towards the centre.
Involved,
Inturned,
The flowering all inward and womb-fibrilled;
And but one orifice.
The fig, the horse-shoe, the squash-blossom.
Symbols.
There was a flower that flowered inward, womb-ward;
Now there is a fruit like a ripe womb.
It was always a secret.
That’s how it should be, the female should always be secret.
Shouldn’t Jesus know when figs are in season and when they are not? Or does omniscience fall just shy of knowledge fig related?
Well, Jesus isn’t God, of course. Jesus is essentially supposed to be human, and of course he was, so heck, very human to get annoyed at a fig tree, and also, unfortunately, very human for some later dudes to interpret this as a revelation.
Yes. It appears Jesus and God do not agree on figs. Genesis 1:31.
@Kathryn,
I agree to your comment!
I think this is a forecasting of the roman catholic church’s attempt to control women and women’s sexuality (see comment #1). Women cannot win; fruit weren’t produced out of season and so the followers are told never to eat figs again.
Kathryn, of course God knows figs aren’t produced out of season; that’s part of the message: to succeed women have to be unnatural.
This is why women can’t be priests. It all comes down to figs.
{total snark, by the way}
jj- I wonder if women can’t be priests further because we should always be ready to bear figs in case a man wants some. Abstinence, whether for the sake preistly duty or because it’s simply the wrong season, would mean needing to find another tree or waiting for the right time of year. That just won’t do. (Also being snarky)
the INTERNET is not the place to learn the gospel. GO TO CHURCH, and come in fellowship with others who know the word. ! Becuz the bible states that those who do not read the word nor practice it(living in christianity life) is cursed. pick up a bible & read for yourselves ! before its tooo late..
