Didn’t you mean ‘congress*man*’? January 11, 2011

If you type in ‘congresswoman assassinated’, google asks if you meant ‘congressman’. It might seem this means that google thinks ‘congresswoman’ isn’t a word, but the truth is more complex. (Thanks, Jeff!)

    This is interesting. In the comments on the original post people wonder whether there is much to it. But we could similarly point out that implicit bias can originate merely as picking up regularities in one’s environment.

    This is true, though to create bias those regularities must be subjective rather than objective; the latter seem more likely to be at play here with Google.
