Where are the women? May 25, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — redeyedtreefrog @ 5:01 am

Here’s Stuff’s list of 25 top movie lines. Not bad. Except that of the twenty five only two are by women. A friend suggested they’re missing good lines from Mae West, Katherine Hepburn and all those other strong, saucy women. Which great movie lines, by women, do you think should be on a ‘best lines from the movies’ list? Here’s one of my favourites.

On a roll here. Jamie Lee Curtis, in A Fish Called Wanda, speaking to Otto: The central message of Buddhism is not “Every man for himself!” And the London Underground is not a political movement!

And “I’ve worn dresses with higher IQs” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5IQnQhzMSI

Jessica Rabbit: I’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way. (Kathleen Turner)

  6. Rebecca Kukla Says:

I always wondered why everyone seems so certain of E.T.’s sex.

More seriously, it seems to me it took willful obtuseness for them to make some of the choices they made in the face of the gendered pattern. “Stellaaaahh!” but not “I’ve always relied on the kindness of strangers”? “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”, but not “As god is my witness, I’ll never go hungry again!” I mean c’mon, if you’re going to pick lines from movies with wildly famous one-liners by women anyhow… Annoying.

  7. s Says:

Bette Davis: “Fasten your seatbelt, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”

  8. Katy Abramson Says:

best ever= Katherine Hepburn, as Eleanor of Aquitaine, “I could peel you like a pear and God himself would call it justice.”

  9. DW Says:

There wasn’t a single Wizard of Oz quote!

“I’ll get you, my pretty… and your little dog, too!” – Wicked Witch of the West

    “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore…” – Dorothy

“My, people come and go so quickly here!” – Dorothy

“You have no power here! Be gone, before somebody drops a house on you, too! ” – Glinda

“There’s no place like home.” – Dorothy

  10. Robin Says:

“I am NOT a committee” and “I have a bad feeling about this”– two lines from Carrie Fisher that are now more or less idioms in the Star Wars canon, used lots by any numbers of characters.

  11. Merry Says:

Bacall to Bogie in To Have and Have Not: “You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and…blow.”

Katy, The Lion in Winter is one of my favorites.

@Rebecca: I wasn’t sure how to classify ET. I thought not as a girl or woman, but wasn’t certain about boy or man either.

    How about Sunset Boulevard?

“I am big; it’s the pictures that got small.”

How to pick just one from Rita Hayworth’s performance in Gilda (here are many of them: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038559/quotes)? But it’s hard to beat Gilda’s reaction upon being asked if she is decent: “Me? [sees Johnny Farrell] …. Sure, I’m decent”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quVSpMmPu1Q

  18. John Protevi Says:

OK, last one, again from Gilda:

Gilda: You do hate me, don’t you, Johnny?
Johnny Farrell: I don’t think you have any idea of how much.
Gilda: Hate is a very exciting emotion. Haven’t you noticed? Very exciting. I hate you too, Johnny. I hate you so much I think I’m going to die from it. Darling…
    [they kiss passionately]
Gilda: I think I’m going to die from it.

  19. Helen De Cruz Says:

“Nature, Mr. Allnut, is what we are put in this world to rise above.” – Katherine Hepburn to Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen.
