I think male cats of various sizes and wildness have a poor record with little ones in litters. E.g., eating them. Bad Darwinian advice, it would seem, but then who really wants to share? Perhaps the staff made sure he was well fed. As it was, there were a lot of people in vans prepared to intervene.
I suppose this is compatible with recognizing fatherhood. Certainly, there are human dads who see children as interlopers.
