Movies, Manhood and the Bechtel Test January 24, 2013

Worth watching and discussing – it changed the way I think about The Wizard of Oz. I’m only surprised the speaker didn’t note that the forthcoming Oz movie looks set to be all about the (male ) wizard.

One Response to “Movies, Manhood and the Bechtel Test”

  1. “[Movies] are doing a phenomenal job of teaching girls how to defend against the patriarchy, but they are not necessarily showing boys how they’re supposed to defend against the patriarchy.”

Disagree with the first part, but the second part was a great line. And I love how the speaker went through aspects of Star Wars and asked, “What else is my son picking up on?” while flashing a picture of the son dressed as a jedi wielding a light saber, to push home the point that saying ‘oh nothing it’s just a movie’ is a cop out here.

“Is girl power enough if at the same time we are actively or passively training our sons to maintain their boy power?” <–Another really good line.
