Hi
glad to have this opportunity to tell a story about VP
In 1985/6 I worked in Gleebooks. EVery now and then we would go through the ‘special orders’ file and weed out any no longer current for whatever reason. It was a very clunky old system in those pre computer olden days. Not too long – a few months perhaps after the well-publicised croc attack
David Gaunt and I found Val’s order for a copy of Peter Singer’s “The Moral Rights of Animals’ – we permitted ourselves two rueful chuckles and tossed the white handwritten card in the bin with words to the effect that she probably would not be needing that any more.
That very afternoon she hobbled in on her crutches and asked if it had come in yet.
I was amazed adn impressed, partly by the coincidence but mostly by her consistency, the way she kept faith with her ideals despite the horrific challenge she had endured. I am sure that as a philosopher Val Plumwood will assume more and more importance as we come to grips with the morality of our human relationship with the rest of the biota
Yours Sincerely
Anne
