Hillary Clinton as secretary of state? W/ addition

That’s the Thurs night buzz.  What do you think about the merits of such a choice?  Of course, even if it does happen, it will be some mixture of agreements and compromises, but generally is it good or bad?

Such an appointment would mitigate two worries of mine:

1.  His administration needs to do more than take women’s concerns seriously.  It needs to see women as very important moral agents who do the deciding on a wide range of issues.  Hillary doesn’t just represent a lot of women’s interest; she embodies an extremely important perspective.  Or at least she can.

2.  I’d be reassured to find he can work with a powerful woman like her.  No doubt for wise political reasons, Michelle Obama is being hyper non-threatening right now.  Hillary is sort of at the  opposite end.

Of course,  there’s much more to be said about her qualifications.  And Bill.  (I  guess we all have to live with the fact that he’ll always be a part of her narrative.)  But, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Added:  Rachel Maddow’s interesting discussion on the possibility:

  1. I feel less in need of reassurance than you do, JJ, but I think she’d be a great choice on many grounds, including her already extensive diplomatic experience. (And that’s one place where Bill might actually help, instead of hurt.)

  2. Hillary can stand on her own and sort out any (supposed)direction from Bill. She proved that during the primary when the (old and young) boys’ clubs ganged up on her. And Obama owes her big time.

  3. I’m really glad that you wrote that this administration needs to see women as moral agents; its very true and I’m glad that you use the word moral rather than ethical, its so unpopular where I am and I’m wondering if Obama’s compain rhetoric will, due to his popularity, reclaim the word.
    i’ve gone off topic.
Not sure what I think yet.

  4. Thanks so much, dk. In the States we have, I think, experienced a real assault on women’s interests, and it’s tempting to think it is enough just to pay serious attention to them. But it is not if, e.g., we’re kept out of the decision making.

  5. As Rachel Maddow pointed out, Hillary has been a war-hawk in the Senate and has supported almost all of Bush’s disastrous foreign policy moves.

Hillary disastrous – and I would say criminal – vote to support the Authorization of Force not only disqualifies Hillary from the presidency – it disqualifies her from Secretary of State in the Obama administration.
