Let’s celebrate some good news!

First, Carol Ann Duffy is the first woman to be named as Britain’s poet laureate which is truly wonderful.

And second (perhaps with slightly less national significance, but I found it very pleasing) BBC Radio 4’s ‘In Our Time’ yesterday was on astrophysics, and two of the three experts were women: Jocelyn Bell Burnell, pioneer of radio astronomy and currently visiting professor of astrophysics at Oxford University, and Ruth Gregory, professor of theoretical physics at Durham University.

Hurrahs all round, I say!

  1. Duffy is also the first Scot to be given the appointment. that seems cause for celebration too!

she apparently wasn’t keen to take the post, but did so because she thought it was important to raise awareness of women poets. good for her! and i love it that she’s insisted on collecting her “butt of sack” (equivalent to about 600 bottles of sherry) as is her traditional due as laureate. :)

  2. I know! Apparently she’s concerned that Andrew Motion, her predecessor, hasn’t had his 600 bottles yet, so she wants it up front.
Also, she’s gay – see article in the Pink Paper: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-12253.html
Amazingly, the Daily Mail just mentions that fact immediately before commenting that her poems are on the national exam syllabus for age 16:

Do you think they genuinely don’t care she’s a lesbian, or are they just relying on their readers to generate their own outrage from the two facts put together…?
