Mental Causation: Another International Conference for Men?

If you go to the Leiter page that mentions the conference discussed here, you might see the advertisement over to the right, about an international conference on mental causation.  And if you follow the link, once again you’ll find a conference without women.

elp  has composed a great letter to conference organizers of  the Leiter-mentioned conference.   A version of it is going off to another set of project leaders.

I’ve just been looking at a list of 32 women in philosophy of mind, many of the grad students at great places.  What message goes out to them from something like the mental causation conference?

  1. one of the organizers, and more to the point, AHRC grant recipients (if i understand correctly) is a woman. because of this, it could be the AHRC think that they’re supporting women in the field by awarding this grant. that’s unfortunate.

  2. I saw the PI is a women, in particular because I just wrote her. It is a shame if AHRC thinks they’re supporting women with this conference. Perhaps we should write them.

  3. i’d like to hear what the organizers have to say (if anything) first. but if they’re not keen to follow up the issue, i think we certainly should, and dropping a line to the AHRC and/or mind association might be prudent.

  4. Yes, I meant the suggestion as a general thing, as in “sometime in the not too distance future.”

  5. yeah. i don’t know much about how the ahrc operate, so i’d be keen to hear the opinions of any who do. but it seems like a good way to go.
