Another horrible Afghan law

Looks like we need some more international outrage.

Afghanistan has quietly passed a law permitting Shia men to deny their wives food and sustenance if they refuse to obey their husbands’ sexual demands, despite international outrage over an earlier version of the legislation which President Hamid Karzai had promised to review.

You might like to suggest some outrage to Barack Obama.

(Thanks, CR!)

  1. Odd that they feel this needs to be legislated, as it is already clearly included in Sharia/Islamic laws which already govern places like Afghanistan and here in Saudi – I think a close paraphrase is that if the wife is baking bread and her husband wants sex, she must leave the bread in the oven and comply to his wishes. If she refuses, she can be punished, including withholding of food, but also the infamous beating softly with a stick option.

Hey, but I’m all for International Outrage! Sometimes I think it is the ONLY way things will change in places like this!

    Thanks for sharing the info.

  2. Salam,

I disagree with the above comment. Nowhere in Islamic Law do we find any legislation such as this. This is denying a human being of the basic needs such as Food. And this is indeed against Islamic teachings.

Saudi Arabia might be practicing some aspects of Islam, but when it comes to women rights and activities they are slacking behind and many of the things found within Saudi Arabia are not representative of Islam or in accordance with it. As for afghanistan, I don’t see which part of Islamic Law they are practicing.
