Transgender Activist is Presidential Appointee

From the Huffington Post:

President Obama has appointed Amanda Simpson, a transgender woman, to be the Senior Technical Adviser to the Commerce Department…Simpson — a former test pilot and 2004 YWCA “Woman On The Move” — has been active in the aerospace and defense industry for the past 30 years.

And she’s an activist too:

In the past decade, Simpson has been highly active in GLBT issues. In 2005, she successfully worked to have Raytheon adopt gender identity into its Equal Employment Opportunity Policy.

  1. Pardon me if I’m bitter, but it seems to me there are a lot of appointments which is good, but not a lot of action. I’d feel better if he’d have skipped appointing her and pushed Congress for laws prohibiting discrimination against GLBT community members. Of course I’d feel better still if he did both.

  2. That’s also exciting that she has a position as a senior technical advisor (whatever that means) rather than being ghettoized to a job that is only specifically about gender issues.
