Take our jobs

Something to pass on to anyone you know who is upset that illegal aliens are taking American jobs. It’s a generous offer by undocumented workers to train American citizens to do the vital jobs the undocumented workers are currently doing. It includes a job description which makes it clear just how cushy and desirable these jobs are:

*Job may include using hand tools such as knives, hoes, shovels, etc. Duties may include tilling the soil, transplanting, weeding, thinning, picking, cutting, sorting & packing of harvested produce. May set up & operate irrigation equip. Work is performed outside in all weather conditions (Summertime 90+ degree weather) & is physically demanding requiring workers to bend, stoop, lift & carry up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.

Thanks, J-Bro!

  1. I don’t know that it does anyone justice to categorize undocumented workers as only working in agriculture. They’re in the service industries, and any non-corporate entity with a small employee base can fudge numbers enough to hire someone undocumented. Not to mention that in the professions, especially with NAFTA, people are here (and in Canada) on statuses and visas they’re not really eligible for because they’re easier to use and cheaper to get than traditional residency and naturalization.

Of course, when we say “undocumented workers,” we really mean Latin@s working in agriculture, though. It’s easy to make it a big scary problem when they’re not only here “illegally” but also working in unstable jobs that keep them poor so we have to “take care of them.”

I think if we could get rid of that image a little bit we might be more likely to expose the US Immigration process for what it is–a ridiculously difficult thing for anyone, no matter how qualified, used primarily to keep people from participating in our “legal” workforce.

  2. Nice points, Anna.
I gather that many of the undocumented aliens work on putting out forest fires, especially in summer months. These at least in the past been some concerned about who will fill their places.

  3. Tomato pickers earn 1.4 cents per pound and can earn about $60.00 per day.
If pickers received 10 cents a pound, a ‘lazy’ American could earn over $200.00 a day. The price of a tomato would go up by about 3 cents. I would gladly pay 3 cents more for a tomato to have opportunities where I could earn a decent living. This is a no-brainer
