For the non-cognoscenti (which may always include me):  Sortal concepts are concepts of kinds of material things.  One thesis the Sunday Cat is interested in is that sortal concepts are required for tracing the identity of objects.  The question then arises:  is the cat-croissant a counter-example or do we learn that cat-croissant is a sortal concept?  Read on…

  1. I’m a little freaked out as the visual transformation of the cat into the croissant suggests baking to me. Eek!

    I’m inclined to think that there are cat-croissant sortals, but that there are no common terms that refer to them.

  2. BUT if cat-croissant is a sortal, then cat is a phase-sortal. No cat will accept the status of being a phase of something else.
