It’s really hard to know what to do about the situation when sexist attitudes are pervasive. But sometimes there are just one or two problematic professors who everyone knows are problematic but no one does anything about. In these cases, I think other faculty members need to be more proactive in addressing the situation. While this is not easy, not intervening fails to take seriously the very pernicious effect even a few people can have on the entire climate of a department.

A very creepy app

Would you like to find some women nearby? And also a whole bunch of information about their private lives? Well, thanks to the perils of social networking (and the misogyny of the world) there is (actually was- read on) an iPhone app for that. Since the linked article was published, the application has been effectively killed. But, as he notes, there’s no reason to believe it won’t resurface in a different form.
