Four years ago, I had never heard of International Women’s Day. Last year, I remember actually seeing people around the blogosphere mention it. This year, more than a few of my Facebook friends have posted about it.
I can’t remember if Google had done a google doodle for the holiday in past years, but I like the one they have up this year:
MORE LINKS AFTER THE JUMP!
And this website has a bunch of nice links pointing out great ways people are celebrating the holiday this year.
And lastly, here’s something of an odd milestone:
The holiday’s gotten a shout out in a video game. I’ve seen games on Facebook do fun stuff for major holidays, but this is definitely a first for one acknowledging International Women’s Day. True, the game celebrates it with flowers, make-up, and other items that taken together scream “upper class trappings of womanhood ftw!” But then again, the goal of the whole game is for the protagonist to reclaim his family’s upper class status through entrepreneurship, so at least it’s got thematic consistency going for it. Really, the fact that this holiday even hit their radar is surprising to me.
I don’t know whether I would say that it is getting more popular with the right crowd though.
VEry interesting what happening at the Women of the World (WOW) event in London’s South Bank. http://wow.southbankcentre.co.uk
Next year they should include some philosophers in their schedule, though.
Maybe it’s more that more people are hearing of it. I plead ignorance on this, myself.
