Time to get serious about white culture of violence

They’d like to bury their heads in the sand and pretend that all white children are as sweet and harmless as Taylor Swift. But the reality is that the statistics tell a different story. For instance, according to research from the Department of Justice, 84 percent of white murder victims are killed by other white people [PDF]. Similarly, white rape victims tend to be raped by other whites [PDF]. White-on-white violence is a menace to white communities across the country, and yet you never hear white leaders like Pastor Joel Osteen, Bill O’Reilly, or Hillary Clinton take a firm stance against the scourge.

  1. I guess that underlying this is the tacit proposition that comparable inferences regarding a “culture of violence”, etc., may or should be drawn from (i) the DOJ statistic that 84% of white murder victims in the United States are killed by other white people and (ii) the DOJ statistic that 93% of black murder victims in the United States are killed by other black people. However, no real argument in support of this proposition is advanced either in the quoted Gawker piece or in any of the sources that it links, and the truth of it is not exactly obvious on its face. That kind of makes what I take to be the “turning the tables” rhetorical device here fall a bit flat.

  2. Thanks for this. It’s boggling that the enraged white elephant in the room is hardly ever a matter of serious discussion.

  3. I believe about 80% of all murders are committed by either relatives or people the victim knew, and therefore the perpetrator is more likely to have things in common with the victim including race, ethnicity, class, education etc…

  4. More importantly, our public schools have created school-to-prison pipelines in which minority children are treated like criminals for infractions that white children often get away with, or have excused. The problem had become so bad in Meridian, Mississippi, that the feds intervened.

I think it’s like Judith Butler’s concept of everyone in another nation being seen as an instrument of war; our society tends to view every minority child as an instrument of crime. To whatever degree most of the actors in institutionalized racism are aware of their own racism the scales are so weighted in favor of the status quo that most of the actors don’t have to be rabidly, consciously racist in order to keep the institution intact.

  5. Wileywitch, notwithstanding the Administration’s allegation in the Mississippi case, there are empirical grounds to doubt the oft-proposed thesis of racial bias as a factor in school discipline (which is, of course, a distinct matter from the existence of a “school-to-prison pipeline”). For example, using some of the best available data (a unique, large and well-studied dataset from North Carolina), Kinsler (2010) finds no evidence that race plays any material role in disciplinary choices; the significant determinants being cross-school variation in disciplinary policy, type of infraction, and number of previous infractions.

  6. Darnit, I’ve inexplicably confused two commenters again. Need to change the ol’ eyeglass prescription, or something. My previous comment was in reply to Felonious Grammar’s comment, of course. (Wileywitch hasn’t even commented here!) Mea maxima culpa.

  7. Merry, you raise a good point. Proximity and exposure are indeed factors that, in the absence of complete integration of neighborhoods/communities, tends to push up the intraracial murder percentages (both white-white and black-black).

However, the statistic alluded to in the OP (84% of white murder victims were killed by white perpetrators over the period 1980-2008), it appears to me, is only marginally higher than what one would predict for a perfectly integrated population with the US racial makeup. The essay linked in the OP is essentially arguing that because the difference between 84% and 93% (the latter being the corresponding statistic for black intraracial murders) seems relatively small viewed from one perspective, they must support comparable inferences. It seems to me, though, that 93% is much, much higher than what one would predict for an intraracial murder figure for blacks on the same basis, given the relatively small fraction of the total US population made up of African-Americans.

  8. Nemo — your confusion is not inexplicable at all. Felonious Grammar has Wiley Witch’s gravatar, which seems to link to Wiley Witch’s profile.

  9. I have no idea how that happened. The gravatar for felonious grammar is a NASA monkey.

  10. But Taylor Swift ISN’T harmless! She makes my ears bleed.
Enlightening piece, by the way.Glad to see this being addressed because of the topics popping up as of late.

  11. Please do watch the interview linked in #12. It puts the modesty of Mr Jefferson’s proposal in stark relief, and is the start of a national conversation we sorely need.
