  1. To my male logician/analytic philosopher colleagues: Can you possibly consider limiting the number of conferences that you speak at per year, that feature a lineup of all male speakers? I see you going to these again and again…I don’t think you understand the impact of what you are doing.

    Some of us philosophers who are male are not also white. Given the common phenomenon of all-white or no-black conferences in philosophy, I feel some obligation to speak on the fairly few occasions that I am invited. Consider it a service to the profession, since (unless the topic involves race) those conferences usually will be spared the familiar, if underappreciated, ignominy of being all-white or no-black — and having one of us speaking does look better than having none, particularly in a context like the United States or England. I hope you will understand.
